The purpose of this study was to review the use of a tobacco cessation program for glioma patients in the management of tobacco dependence, assess the rates of self-reported tobacco cessation and smoking status following the completion of treatment, and compare the results to those of other similar studies. A cohort of 626 glioma patients was interviewed at initial diagnosis, at the completion of treatment, and 3 and 6 months post-treatment. Self-reported tobacco use was assessed by using the Stages of Change Readiness and Treatment Eagerness Scale (SOCRATES) and the 30-day point prevalence abstinence, and by self-reported saliva cotinine levels for those who were able to provide a saliva sample. The median age of the cohort was 52 years; half were male, and 64% were diagnosed with a low-grade glioma. Following the completion of treatment, the rate of self-reported tobacco cessation was 47% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 43-51%). Of those who self-reported a cessation, 27% (95% CI: 22-33%) had a negative cotinine test, and 4% (95% CI: 2-6%) were biochemically confirmed by a cotinine test. The prevalence of biochemically confirmed smoking abstinence was 4% (95% CI: 2-6%) after 3 months and 1% (95% CI: 0-2%) after 6 months. This study was the first to evaluate a tobacco cessation program for glioma patients. It demonstrated the feasibility of providing such
